Max to the Max

A good friend of mine has an awesome son. This is him:

And this year, he’s just old enough to start worrying about bullies and what other kids will think and say and do. He told his mom he didn’t want to go to his school’s Halloween party for that reason. His mom blogged about it, too.

But his mom had volunteered to set up for that party, and once he saw the decorations, he wanted to go.

And he did. And he had a great time. And some people were jerks.

So I thought you, my lovely readers, would show Max some love, here, or when this shows up on my FB page, or via Twitter. He’d love to know that he is awesome the way he is, and that his mom rocks, and that there is a whole world of people who would get in the way of any bully for him.

Please do not assume or try to predict anything about how he may or may not identify in the future. Right now he’s just Max.

Happy Halloween, my gendery clan. Go out and get your joy on.

No, Really: Sexy Droogie

Honestly, someone is actually marketing a Sexy Droogie Costume for women who want to be Alex of A Clockwork Orange fame.  You know the movie – the one with one of the most horrifying rape scenes ever filmed? But sure! Just add thigh highs and cleavage!Of course they don’t call it that, since I’m guessing anyone selling or buying this costume hasn’t actually read the fucking book.

So while I’m thinking, who the hell is going to buy that, my google-fu turns up this exchange in Yahoo! Answers:

Sexy clockwork orange costume. any ideas?

so me and my boyfriend are trying to think up halloween costume ideas and i thought of being droogs from clockwork orange. so i was thinking get the white button up shirt, the white suspenders, derby hat, but with thigh high fishnets, stilletos and lots of clevage. oh and of course the one fake eyelash and cane. not so sure what to use for pants/skirt. maybe highwasted shorts.

any ideas on how to improve this costume?

& Yay, someone has an idea! Boots and tight shorts to go with the cleavage! That does it!

I am also going to be Alex for halloween this year. I am a female and will be wearing short white shorts and knee high black boots to make the outfit a little sexier. There are lots of different versions of this theme. If you google it you can see lots of pics. Im also going to do the bloody eyeballs. Good luck with your costume!

Some days I just want to stay in bed until the planet gets less stupid.

This Halloween’s Gender Story

Every year there’s a Halloween gender “problem,” but now, at least, there are moms who tell other moms to “back off.”

I can’t tell you how many people sent me this story, but I know it made plenty of us cry. In the good way.

Happy Halloween!

Ah, the only internationally recognized holiday of the crossdressing world is upon us again, & I had an interesting experience shopping for Halloween costumes & party decorations with Betty.

We were looking around at the mass-produced costumes, me mostly cursing about the oversexed women’s and girl’s costumes (the girls’ costumes show more skin than the ones for adult men, for crying out loud) and Betty thought maybe she’d figure out a costume around an interesting wig. But: I found myself getting uncomfortable when she started trying them on. It was just too much of the past, & started messing with my sense of her gender. It was a Big Deal when she finally got to grow her hair long enough, and have it styled unisex/feminine, that the wigs brought me right back to when she couldn’t do that and had to have men’s cuts (since she was a leading man onstage) and so had to wear wigs in order to go out “en femme.”

So no wigs for us, but we did use spray-on black hair dye (so she could be Wednesday Addams & I could be Frida Kahlo, unibrow & all).

Halloween is still far & above our favorite holiday, but it’s definitely taken on new meanings in this post-trans life of ours. My feminism is more tweaked when she wants to wear short skirts & fetishy shoes because I expect her to say no to all this bullshit objectification of women — and that’s in addition to the absolute bullshit of this culture agreeing that it’s okay for women to be sexual once a year (& once a year only).

So what about you? Has Halloween changed for you in the context of your trans identity/journey? I’d love to hear.

His Son’s Dress

I don’t know why these stories depress me so much, and really, it’s the ones with the cheerfully liberal dad who really is trying his hardest not to be a dick.
And yet, he is.

Sigh. And we didn’t even have to wait until Halloween this year.
