So much depends on the reaction of the community to this type of situation.
I remember as a child being severely scolded by my mother just because a cranky neighbor told her he thought the sounds I was making while playing were abnormal. She later realized how wrong he was and how wrong her response to his comment had been and apologized to me but I will never forget that incident and how easily even family are influenced by the opinions of others.
Fortunately, the bonds between successful couples like this one are quite strong and fairly elastic to the extent that with the help of an understanding community such relationships can survive and thrive.
