When I came out to my partner, her politics represented the liberal side of the family equation. I was slowly still recovering from my republican upbringing. Unknown to her, as part of my private journey, my views were exploding as I became aware of GLBT issues, civil rights issues, etc. On nearly all fronts, I morphed into a (sometimes flaming) liberal. So, you might think all is good…not so. My partner was hurt that I could change something so fundamental as my political belief system so radically without giving her a clue. So, while today we share very similar views on most political topics, this is another area where I was not “all in” in the relationship throughout the years of secrecy, a violation of the emotional and intellectual intimacy that was part of our bedrock.
