Pre-Order Signed Copies

Since people have asked, I’ve set up a PayPal link so that folks can pre-order signed copies of She’s Not the Man I Married. From what they tell me, although the publication date is 3/1, the book will ship on 2/1. I can’t promise I will get you one before Amazon can, but they can’t get you a signed copy and I can!

Please try to get me your order by 1/22 if you want one in a hurry – but of course there’s no deadline otherwise, as I will continue to sell signed copies through this site.

Trans Partners Drop In Group

This month’s Trans Partners Group topic is family. You’ve all gotten back from holiday trips you may have taken, or you’ve stayed in your home and wondered why you feel so estranged for your family – or your partner’s.

The meeting starts at 7:30PM, lasts until 9PM, on Wednesday, January 3rd (that’s tomorrow if you’re reading this when this post goes up!), and meets at the LGBT Center on West 13th Street.

I’ll be co-facilitating the group just as I did this past fall, and the next one isn’t until February 7th because of the new monthly schedule, so do come! The upcoming themes are as follows:

  • January: family
  • February: community
  • March: the partner’s gender identity
  • April: sexuality
  • May: free-form/bring your own topic

(& Tonight, of course, is the monthly meeting of the mHB group, with a special guest visit from Marlena!)

New Year’s Revolutions

I used to be one of those people who wrote down my New Year’s resolutions & sealed them into an envelope that I stored away to find & open the next New Year’s. Amazingly enough they did me no good like that, a private forgotten stash of good intentions.

So this year I will announce my intentions to the world, or to whatever tiny percentage of the world reads this blog, & see if that does me any better.

I, Helen Boyd, do resolve to undertake these resolutions resolutely:

  1. I will lose another 10 pounds this year.
  2. I will try not to worry myself to death over the reviews of SNTMIM, and instead actually take a minute to enjoy getting published again.
  3. By the end of the year, I will be on some path that will lead to making money in jobs I don’t hate.

Three is enough; for anyone who knows me or has gotten to know me through this blog, these three make up quite the tall order.

So what are yours?

A Few Days

Betty & I are off to visit some friends who live in the country around the New Year’s celebrations, so have a good one, and be safe. (Please do not drink & drive.)

It’s been 52 weeks; how many have you done? Did you do other things they didn’t list?

The System

So I said the other day that I have a system for seeing what change I will try to effect for myself in the upcoming year. I came up with it a couple of years ago when I realized I had certain goals re: my writing career but ones that I could easily & endlessly put off if I didn’t pay attention. They weren’t big things – things like getting an essay into an anthology, or getting 10k copies in print – but I simultaneously realized that I tend to be somewhat Auspergerish in my single-mindedness, so that if I focus on one thing – like weight loss – I tend to get it done & then everything else turns to crap.

A friend of mine used to refer to this as Getting Your Ducks in a Row: that once you got one errant duck back in line, another, or two, would have slipped out & wandered off.

So in order to be effective I had to keep my eye on a couple of ducks at a time, I decided I’d have four areas of self-improvement (or self-actualization, or whatever New Age-y thing you’d like to call it). Within those four areas, I break the larger goal into 12 smaller ones, & then try to get one done a month. I “check in” with my goals early in the month to see how it’s going.

& No, I’m not kidding.
