A reader sent this along:
Didn’t Wendy Carlos (Switched on Bach, The Well Tempered Synthesizer, A Clockwork Orange, etc.) sing / preform the National Anthem at a DNC? I think it was one of the Jimmy Carter Conventions which would be 1980 or 84. There was a bit of an uproar since the Convention Program listed . . . her former first name . . . but out came Wendy.
Can anyone confirm this?
This is too cool. Historically cool.
That said, one of my readers has pointed out that a trans person served as a delegate as early as 1968. After that, not until 2002 (as far as I know). And now: 14.
And one delegate is from Wisconsin, even.

Last night, the DNC made history by adopting a pro-marriage equality platform.
I was flabbergasted and very, very pleased.
It wasn’t necessarily the best decision politically, but it was the right – and historic – choice.
So let’s make sure they weren’t wrong and get Obama re-elected, okay?
There are 15 out trans delegates at the DNC, and this is them taking the stage at the LGBT Caucus, which happened today.
So why not donate $13 to Obama’s campaign to recognize this historic moment?
(As someone born on the 13th, I can promise you it’s not bad luck.)
It’s back to school for so many today – not quite us, although students are arriving on/returning to campus, which is great to see. I hope you all have a great term/semester/year!
io9 has a nice column about writers & writing blocks, & they’ve included not just what the block was but how the person got past it.
Self-doubt, self-doubt, self-doubt. Time. Other people’s doubts. Not selling anything. But this one, contributed by Eugene Fischer, was my biggest:
My biggest stumbling block becoming a writer was actually deciding it was an acceptable thing to do with your life.
I never really did decide it was an acceptable thing to do with my life. It was more that it was the only thing I could do for a year after 9/11 and had fallen apart: I spent all of 2002 writing a novel and playing with our kittens.
California’s Assembly voted Thursday to approve a bill that would prevent people from practicing “ex gay” therapy on minors.
About damn time. & Way to go, California.
