Gaga Sings the Trans

Posted by – January 30, 2011

Lady Gaga’s new song “Born This Way” from her upcoming CD Born This Way has these lyrics:

Bridge
Don’t be a drag, be a queen
Whether you’re broke or evergreen
You’re black, white, beige chola descent
You’re Lebanese, You’re Orient
Whether life’s disabilities
Left you outcast, bullied or teased
Rejoice and love yourself today
Cause baby you we’re born this way
No matter gay, straight, or bi
Lesbian, transgendered life
I’m on the right track baby
I was born to survive
No matter black, white or beige
Chola or Orient made
I’m on the right track baby
I was born to be brave

And to temper the news, read this critique of the Gaga when she gets it wrong on LGBT issues.

I didn’t realize that being trans-positive gave Gaga a pass on using an outdated, racist term like “Orient made.”

  2. helenboyd says:

“chola” isn’t used as a compliment all the time, either.

apparently she’s casting trans people for the video.

    i’m getting kind of squicked.

  3. Leah B says:

Yeah, “Orient made” was a misstep for sure. Cholo’s context suggests that she’s using it as a race, but cholo is an identity that incorporates race. Be interesting to see her comments here when the song drops and the controversy cycle kicks up.
