South African doctor invents female condoms with ‘teeth’ to fight rape

Do you really even need to read the rest of the story?

Vagina dentata via prophylactic. (I’m sorry, has there not been a punk female vocalist named Vagina Dentata yet? or a derby grrrl?)

  1. Wow

Turns out that you do need to read the rest of the article. It seems like, if your expectation of being raped is high enough that getting and inserting one of these were worthwhile, then a whole lot of less wacky measures would be called for, too – and yet, near the end of the article –

“Women take drastic measures to prevent rape in South Africa, Ehlers said, with some wearing extra tight biker shorts and others inserting razor blades wrapped in sponges in their private parts.”

Which is really horrifying. It means this isn’t a wacky trumped-up idea, it’s just an improvement on a level of desperation that’s already there. Dear God.
