Kids These Days

The Walkman turned 30 and one kid who’s 13 took three days to figure out you can flip the cassette for more music. And they say these kids are clever.

& Yes, I do still have my yellow Sports version… somewhere. And a LOT of cassettes. I still miss the mindful mixing of 45 minutes of music. Tape-cover making was an art form all its own too: my favorite personal creation was a cover I painted a purplish black and then wrote on with a toothpick dipped in Wite-Out. It was a Love & RocketsExpress b/w Tones on Tail and gave me many hours of listening pleasure. Now, Tones on Tail songs are on car commercials. *sigh*

Ah, back in the day.

I remember getting my Nakamichi mixing deck and feeling like George Martin. Right there with ya!! (adore Love and Rockets, too!)

My first encounter with a Walkman was when a skateboarder ran me over because he was too wrapped up in his music! I’ve always thought of that as short-sharp-shock aversion therapy. Was reading Love and Rockets a couple of years later (rather than listening to the band). Still have my mint condition #1 of Los Bros’ finest!

    HAUNTED, When the minutes drag…

I loved mix tapes. Loved the cover art. It’s just not the same with MP3s and digital tracks downloaded on the iPod. Not the same at all. But I remember the explosion of cassettes destroying LP sales, and everyone lamenting the death of album cover art. And so we move on. What’s next?
