Another Goth Christmas

So it turns out Tim Burton has re-made Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, with Johnny Depp (of course) playing Sweeney Todd… but who knew he could sing? Apparently he didn’t.

& It’s coming out on Christmas Day. Nice to have a little Grand Guignol to offset the holiday cheer.

  1. “Offset”? For my taste, it will go hand in hand with the holiday cheer. I can’t wait!

  2. I’m deeply skeptical. I love Johnny Depp and I enjoy Tim Burton, but I feel a strong attachment to Sweeney Todd, and in my experience most musicals suck hardcore when they transfer from the stage to the screen.

  3. Red, I agree completely. I’m way obsessed with Sweeney Todd, and what I’ve seen from the ads already seems terribly off. And what you said about musicals not translating. Also, I’m beginning to think Tim Burton is terribly over-rated. Beetlejuice and Nightmare Bf Xmas are excellent, but the rest? Eh. What I’d really like to see is the John Waters take on Sweeney. That, to me, couldn’t possibly be wrong. Lu brilliantly envisions him casting bloated has-been Christian Slater in the role of Todd (Waters works has-been magic.) And Depp would do better as Mrs. Lovett, me thinks. Oh, if only I had JW’s number.

  4. On the other hand, from what I’ve heard/read so far about Depp-as-Todd (including an article in Entertainment Weekly), Stephen Sondheim himself seems very pleased with the result.
