A Boy’s Name?

A girl named Randi was beaten for having a boy’s name.

“They started talking about me like I was a man,” she told local news station WREG. “That I shouldn’t be in this world. And my name was a boy name.” The four girls and a boy surrounded her after a Fellowship of Christian Students meeting, and, she said, kicked her in the rib and leg, hit her in the face, sat on her, pushed her face into the floor, and threw her onto a cafeteria table.

It really makes you wonder what they’re teaching kids in a Fellowship of Christian Students. I guess they didn’t get to the “don’t beat people up” meeting yet.

  1. I was threatened by other boys in both Sunday school and youth group, not excessively but enough to remember it. I dreaded going sometimes because I knew what was going to happen.

  2. Wow. WWJB? (Who Would Jesus Beat?)

On the one hand, these are 12-year-old kids. On the other hand, kids internalize what they see from their parents.

To me, this is the logical outcome of conservative Christians ranting and raving about the so-called “homosexual agenda” and preaching that anyone who fails to conform to gender norms is a “sinner.” And it seems to me no coincidence that so-called Christian groups have been at the forefront of stopping anti-bullying policies from being put into place in public school systems.

You’ve got to be taught, before it’s too late / Before you are six or seven or eight / To hate all the people that your parents hate / You’ve got to be carefully taught
