Two Tune Tuesday: Joe Hill

Posted by – March 15, 2011

Madison’s protests meet Women’s History Month, but how could I resist Paul Robeson’s version of “Joe Hill”, too? Damn: that one gives me shivers.

Still, folk singers of two generations: : Joan Baez’s “Joe Hill” was a huge deal at Woodstock, and Michelle Shocked performed at the Madison protests a couple of weekends ago. Here’s her “Quality of Mercy” (and you can read the lyrics here).

Honestly, I almost choked when I saw the images of Joe Hill at the first rally I went to; seeing his image was like going backwards & forwards in time at the same time.

Two Tune Tuesday: Marianne Faithfull

Posted by – March 8, 2011

It IS Women’s History Month, so we’ll be hearing only from the ladies this month. That said, I’m not sure Ms. Faithfull would want to be called a lady, either.

Still, “Working Class Hero” is a classic (and hereby dedicated to the ongoing protests in Madison). It’s been covered by Green Day, too.

And then there’s “Why’d Ya Do It?” which is probably the angriest song ever: “why’d you betray my little oyster for such a low bid” is one of the nastiest, most poetic accusations ever put to music.

Yikes. Barbed Wire Pussy, indeed.

How could I not? Billy Bragg, modern labor troubador, at your service. (He’s damned good live, if you get the chance.)

For those labor geeks out there, there’s a recording of the original Florence Reece song “Which Side Are You On?” on YouTube. You can listen to Billy Bragg’s studio version of that song, too, which is one of my all-time favorites.

(thanks to my friend Cleo of the band Alright Alright for reminding me of the 2nd track!)

Two Tune Tuesday: Devotchka

Uh oh. New Devotchka!

& Here’s some old Devotchka, if you missed them somehow.

Two Tune Tuesday: Bright Eyes

In honor of his new one, People’s Keys (which you can hear over at NPR), here’s two tracks by Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst both quiet & loud:

Two Tune Tuesday: What You (Didn’t) Say

Posted by – February 1, 2011

I heard the Toby Lightman on an episode of Bones the other day & the lyrics leapt out at me — as lyrics will when they are so close to what you’re already feeling. In looking for a song to go with it, I wanted Elvis Costello’s cover of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” and found instead Via Tania’s — and I’d never heard of her before but was pretty stunned with how gorgeous and different her cover was.

Everyday is a struggle between what I wanna say
And what I should keep to myself
And the words that manage to leave my lips
Don’t hurt me, but they hurt everyone else More

Two Tune Tuesday: Amanda Palmer Shows Off Her Bush

Posted by – January 25, 2011

By god this is brilliant:

Amanda Palmer & The Young Punx – “Map of Tasmania” Music Video from Amanda Palmer on Vimeo.

She’s Neil Gaiman’s wife, and formerly of The Dresden Dolls. It’s kinda hard not to hate her, except that I can’t, exactly because of songs like this — and there is way too much Ants style going on (& maybe some Ari Up, too).

Two Tune Tuesday: Cage the Elephant

Posted by – January 18, 2011

Wow do I hate their name, but I heard this “wicked” track on the radio the other day & thought they had an interesting thing going on. I can’t make up my mind where it’s coming from: I alternately think of Aerosmith, early Beck, the Pistols (there’s some John Lydon in his voice) & Nirvana.

Hugely derivative, yet still entertaining.

Two Tune Tuesday: Pink

A student mentioned her in my feminist theory class – as an example of a cool feminist woman in the media – so here she is, first hit & most recent. I’ve always loved that she flaunts her lack of dainty, and how can you not someone who came up with “too school for cool”? Count me in: wrong in all the right ways, indeed.

It Gets Better (Music Video edition)

Posted by – January 9, 2011

It’s a singalong!

One day you’ll look back and you won’t give a fuck
When you’re swimming through your pussy vault like Scrooge Fucking Mcduck
And when you’re snatching your first grammy super glammy lookin slick
It wont be much time till they get in line for a chance to suck your dick

All the lyrics here, but those are my favorite: I’m pretty sure pussy and Scrooge McDuck have never appeared in a song lyric together before.

Two Tune Tuesday: Final 2010 Edition

I’m loving this list of NPR listener-chosen albums of 2010, and even more the tracks off those albums. And while I can’t help but laugh when I hear Cee Lo Green’s “Fuck You” – ain’t that some shit? – my heart (and feet) go to Janelle Monae who is just fucking fantastic in her black & whites, tuxedos, & pompadour:

“Tightrope” is, hands down, my favorite song to dance around my apt to (not that I ever do that).

AND, because I live in this neck of the woods now, here is a list of the best albums to come out of Milwaukee this year. Kings Go Forth are like Philly soul all over again (though I haven’t seen them live yet), and I suspect Eric & Magill will hit bigger than they have so far. Fans of Rasputina / Dresden Dolls / Squirrel Nut Zippers absolutely need to check out Scarring Party.

Two (or Four, or Seventeen) Tune Tuesday

Posted by – December 21, 2010

This is more like a four-tune Tuesday, or a 17+ tune Tuesday, depending, but I found this lovely list of 2010′s best queer indies and thought I should share it, but I also wanted to share some cool stuff I’ve discovered this year as well. So in addition to those, here’s a preview of some tracks by one of my favorite discoveries of the year: British Sea Power. You can hear some of the tracks, but it’s the Zeus EP I’ve been loving – “Kw-h” in particular. If you like The Kills, definitely check them out, too.

Thank you, Ben Harrison, as always, for tuning me in. His band Etc. has a super(hero) track out, too.

Two Tune Tuesday: KT Tunstall

I got to hear her newest track “Madame Trudeaux” over at NPR, & it’s so lovely, like old school glam. Suzi Quatro would be proud.

Two Tune Tuesday: Liz Phair

Posted by – December 7, 2010

Because it’s my BiL Ian’s birthday, there can be no other choice. By last count, he’s seen her about the same number of times I’ve seen Rufus Wainwright (which is saying something):

Two Tune Tuesday: The Reverend Horton Heat

Posted by – November 30, 2010

They played Milwaukee a few weeks ago & no one I know here was interested. It’s a sad sad day when no one wants to go see psychobilly.

Next time around, maybe.

Two Tune Tuesday: Gang of Four

Posted by – November 23, 2010

In honor of their return, which you can get an earful of care of NPR, I thought it was time for Gang of Four. No, not the Chinese political faction of the Cultural Revolution, but the post punk band. They were always especial favorites for me because the bass player, Dave Allen, went on to be the spine for Shriekback, that lovely post punk funk weirdness of a band (whose lead, Barry Andrews, came from the original XTC lineup).

“To Hell with Poverty” seems about as well-timed this year as it was when they released it, but this time on these shores.

Two Tune Tuesday: Joe Jackson

Posted by – November 16, 2010

Two gender-y tracks from Joe Jackson.

Two Tune Tuesday: Luciana Souza

Posted by – November 9, 2010

I got to see & hear Luciana Souza this past Friday night at Lawrence, and she really blew me away. Like most gringas, my intro to this kind of music was “The Girl from Ipanema” — I’ve got a few versions of it, including that lovely disco one that was on Red Hot + Rio a million years ago — but I’d forgotten how sensual and melancholy a samba can be.

There’s very little good available on either YouTube or Playlist.com of hers, so instead I’ve put up this promo clip from her most recent CD:

And here’s a link to some samples from the CD. Since I can’t stand translated music – I’d rather have no idea what the lyrics are about, or read them – so I’d recommend checking out the “Adeus America & Eu Quero Un Samba.” & here’s Amazon’s mp3 samples, for more.

Two Tune Tuesday: Bauhaus

Hey, it’s Halloween week: a grrrl’s got to let her goth out sometimes.

Two Tune Tuesday: Groovy

Posted by – October 19, 2010

Groovy, no?
Nice to hear the echoes of T.Rex in the Smith Westerns’ track.
