    Well they do work, and that’s the problem. Levi-Strauss once posited that all human conceptualization develops from duality. Subsequently, developmental psychologists have argued that this begins with the perception in infancy of “I” vs. “not-I,” followed by such binaries as “mine vs not-mine.” The wise sage who first uttered the story of the Garden of Eden summarized the plight of humanity as resulting from having gained the knowledge of Good vs. Evil. Before that we, supposedly, lived in a nature better comprehended by scales, spectra, multidimensional statistical clouds of variance. And, Joanie Mitchell pleads to us, we’ve just got to get ourselves back to the Garden.
