The APA is not a democracy, it is a dictatorship (and not a benevolent one). Their raison d'etre is finding disorders among the variations of human behavior. Everything they do is seen through value-judging eyes, influenced by the dominant culture. The illness model will not be abandoned unless and until the APA is forced to give it up. They are currently doing a great job of making themselves irrelevant through their current choice of bedfellows. There is no quick or facile solution to the situation, unfortunately.
