Since it’s so relevant to me this weekend, add Amtrak.

There was a time when fire companies operated as private insurance companies do. Owners of buildings paid premiums in advance, and if you weren’t paid up and your building caught fire, the fire company wouldn’t put it out. This probably didn’t work very well for residents of adjacent buildings. In some European cities you can still see on buildings little metal plaques that say “This building insured by (name of private fire company).”

And they forgot emergency medical services operated by fire departments and emergency centers in hospitals. Every city is required to have one open to anyone and everyone, no matter their health insurance or income. The hospital has to treat and care for them, no matter the seriousness of the problem.

Don’t forget all the publically owned land in this country, managed by the NPS, BLM, USFS, etal. Imagine if it was all sold. How much would be foreign owned by now? Imagine paying for going through or visiting those lands or worse, being prohibited? Privatedly owned, look at all the private forests in this country, almost all long clearcut and much being sold off to developers.

Don’t forget all the water and water treatment systems. We pay the least per quantity of water than any developed nation, all because all of us paid for it for everyone. And it’s all kept to one national standard.

It’s what this country was founded on, everyone contributes for the benefit of everyone. When did we lose this idea of the basic ideal of this country? People espousing privatization are all doing it standing on the top of the foundation our nation built for everyone. Skimming the cream and leaving the milk to sour isn’t our history and it’s not our future.
