Presuming they weren't I'm not surprised they were embarrassed, just like I find it humiliating to have to wear boy's clothes because it's at odds with my inner gender. ... oh, and 100% agreed with Jade about the improvement over avatars and women's clothing. The Xbox Live avatar isn't the only one, either, Sony's Home on the Playstation 3 is the same way. What makes you think the character was a crossdresser? It could be encouraging overall that you can crossdress the character, unlike with X-box live where you must be female to wear female clothes. I'd say that's an improvement.
