Cat of Drawers

I’d taken out a drawer to rearrange its contents, and heard a yowl when I went to put it back in.

This is a variant on “nature abhors a vacuum.”

Many years ago, I had a wonderful puddin named Elanor. One day, I’m cleaning up the room, push one of my dresser drawers in, and it won’t go all the way in. Kind of “bounces” back out. I try again. There’s this soft, bouncy resistance – the drawer won’t get closer than like 6 inches to where it’s supposed to be. Pull the drawer out and there, way in the back, is a very quiet Elanor. I let her stay.

Something similar happened not that long ago with Ziggy — I was trying to close the drawer of a metal filing cabinet I had left open for a while; it wouldn’t close because there was some kind of resistance; I tried a couple more times and it still didn’t close. So finally I bent down and peered at the back of the drawer, and saw this little orange face looking out at me. Somehow, he had managed to squeeze in there, even though there was hardly any space.

Cats are smaller than they look. When they want to be.

So are rodents, for that matter.
